Types Of Fish Used In Fish And Chips in Australia

Australians are spoilt for choice when it comes to fish and chips. As they walk into the local shop for Fish and chips near me or around the country, they get a whole range of different species of fish to try and taste. The local varieties often reflect the local catch. However, there are few popular fish found nationwide. The most popular fish used for making fish and chips in Australia are:

1.    Flake
If you buy flake from a Fish and Chip Shop, you are eating the fillet of a Gummy Shark from Australia, though they are closely related to the New Zealand species. This type of shark is available across most parts of Australia and a firm favourite in the southern states. The fillets of flake are moist, white and soft and almost boneless with a mild flavour of fish.

2.    Whiting
Another popular fish in the Australian waters is whiting and can be one of the thirteen related species available in the continent. In the southern states, whiting is also known as Yellowfin Whiting or King George with Trumpeter or Sand Whiting, which is popular in the north. Whiting has a flaky texture but firm with a sweet flavour.

3.    Snapper
Australian snapper is a part of the bream family, and it is caught all around Australian especially in Western and South Australia. Snapper has flaky and moist flesh with a delicate flavour. It is considered the ideal fish for fish and chips.

4.    Barramundi
A classic Australian fish living both on saltwater and freshwater is Barramundi. Its Aboriginal name means “large-scaled Fish”. The Australian Barramundi is both farmed and wild-caught. Having a moist and firm white-pinkish flesh, its mild but distinctive flavour is a winner.

5.    Flathead
Flathead is a bottom dwelling fish, which is mainly caught off the eastern and south-eastern coast of Australia. There are 44 varieties of flathead species found in Australian waters. The most amongst them are the Dusky Flathead and Sand Flathead. Flathead has a distinctly sweet flavour and its flesh flakes easily.
